One experience not to be missed, while in the Shannon Region, is the unique Shannon Heritage Medieval Banquet entertainments at Bunratty, Knappogue and Dunguaire Castles. These castles were once the splendid homes of noble medieval lords. Today, they are the imposing venues for nights of revelry, fine food and wine. Each castle has a distinctive and riveting entertainment show. Experience the literary greats at Dunguaire Castle. Enjoy an enchanting evening at this 500 year old Castle, one of Ireland’s most picturesque strongholds situated on the shores of Galway Bay. The entertainment celebrates the works of some of the great Irish literary writers such as Synge, Yeats, Shaw and O’Casey. In a truly intimate setting. Dunguaire’s superb artistes will inspire you with the profound and the humorous, the irreverent and the incisive words of these literary giants. The first Shannon Region medieval banquet was held in the restored Bunratty Castle in the early 1960s in a pioneering move to develop additional passenger traffic through the nearby Shannon Airport. Since then its fame has spread worldwide. Following Bunratty’s initial success, two other medieval fortresses – Knappogue and Dunguaire – opened their doors to the public. Over the last 40 years millions of people have experienced these unique evenings. The Castle entertainers have toured worldwide, appeared on top TV shows and entertained many well known dignitaries and celebrities. Details of the Knappogue and Bunratty Castle Banquets can be found on the Discover Ireland website.
