Vinegar Hill Battle Re-enactment
Enniscorthy
03 August 2013 - 04 August 2013
Our battle re-enactment explains the course of the most significant battle to take place during the 1798 Rebellion in Wexford. We recall the 30,000 men, women and children (20,000 rebels and 10,000 of the crown forces) who were on Vinegar Hill on that day in 1798. We invite anybody whose ancestors fought or died during the rebellion in Wexford, or in any of the other counties to rise during 1798 to join us in battle. On Saturday, 3 August visit the Rebel encampment at the National 1798 Rebellion Centre, Millpark Road, Enniscorthy or visit the redcoats at Enniscorthy Castle. The high point of the evening will be a skirmish between the Rebels and Redcoats at the Duffry Gate which will recreate the insurgents' capture of Enniscorthy Town (28 May 1798). On Sunday, both forces will amass all their strength at the Fair Green at 2pm and parade through the town on their way to Vinegar Hill for battle at 3pm. Watch these two armies fight amidst gunfire and explosions, pike charges and cannon fire. A spectacle not to missed! The Battle of Vinegar Hill was the pinnacle of this Rebellion, so don't miss your chance to see history recreated. Already professional re-enactors from Ireland, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and maybe even further afield, are presently planning their assault on the rebel positions. While our rebel forces grow larger every day with more and more aspiring insurgents volunteering to take part.
