Rugged Peaks Challenge

Ballyliffin

12 September 2013

Extreme North's Rugged Peaks Challenge highlights the outdoors of north west Inishowen. Starting and finishing at Pollan Beach, Ballyliffin, now famous for its vantage point for the Northern Lights, the run takes competitors around the beautiful Isle of Doagh, past the famine village and finishing with a 2 mile stretch of Pollan Strand. Straight on to the bike for a moderate, 11 mile cycle to Lenan Bay and a reasonably relaxing (dependent on tides) kayak, before taking on the mountain climb of Urris Lakes to reveal 2 beautiful tranquil lakes and a stunning view of north west Inishowen and the Fanad Peninsula. The descent is relatively manageable with excellent views of Urris and Lenan Bay. The ease will be short lived as the last leg of the challenge has you taking on the mammoth climb of Mamore Gap, one of Donegal's most renowned difficult hill climbs. This event is best completed with a road bike as the entire cycle route is on tarred (but not flat!) roadway. As per all Extreme North events your efforts will not go unrewarded, your arrival at the finish line includes quality events medal, t-shirt and post race buffet to meet and compare your experiences, have a good social chat and maybe, if you're lucky, a few pints of Guinness to help quench your thirst! Date to be confirmed.
