The R.T.É All Ireland Drama Festival sees the country's top nine amateur drama groups compete for the prestigious festival trophy and the honour of becoming All Ireland Champions, 2013. Held under the auspices of the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland, Athlone plays host to the top 9 groups who qualify for a place in the All Ireland Open Finals presenting first class full length productions over a nine night run. The festival is acclaimed as the premier theatrical event of its kind in Ireland and in 2013 celebrates 61 years of top class competitive drama. The festival showcases the very best of Irish amateur theatre and attracts hundreds of visitors to the midlands every year. The festival is supported by a lively fringe which features schools workshops, art exhibitions and other theatrical performances at locations around the town.
