Laytown Strand Races

Laytown

03 September 2013

The annual Laytown Strand Races take place on the beach between Laytown & Bettystown in Co. Meath. The races are unique, not least for their location, because they are the only such event in Europe, and possibly the World, that are run, and are recognised, under the official Rules of Racing. They attract a worldwide audience and recent visitors have travelled from the UK, USA, Australia, Japan, Germany & Scandanavia. The 'races' have featured in many documentaries in these faraway places and, in particular, in BBC TV programmes such as 'Coast' and 'Countryfile'. The beach is a wonderful setting and visitors are enthralled when, on early arrival, the whole area is covered by the sea but within a couple of short hours is transformed into a race track with all the facilities for the thousands who converge on the sleepy seaside village in early September each year. A wonderful backdrop is provided by the Mountains of Mourne and the Irish Sea. The racing is very exciting and competitive and there is always a feeling, as the evening draws to a close, of being part of something very special in Irish folklore and sporting history.
