Sarsfield's Day

Limerick City

10 August 2013

Next August, a one day festival will celebrate Patrick Sarsfield, Limerick's most important historical figure. His part in the defeat of William of Orange at the first siege of Limerick cannot be underestimated. 'Sarsfields Day' will feature elements of history, pageantry, sound & light, music and fireworks and will appeal to all the family. It will include a fireworks display over the river between Sarsfield and Thomond Bridge to replicate the huge explosion at Ballyneety which destroyed a large part of the Williamite siege train. Sarsfield and Galloping Hogan will parade around the city with 100 horsemen in full regalia led by a 40 piece marching band. Sound & Light features will be projected on to the castle walls and along the river. A big name traditional band will feature in concert at a marquee site on Arthurs Quay. Street theatre, jugglers, mime artists and fire eaters etc. will further contribute to the daytime atmosphere in the city. As part of the Gathering it is hoped to attract members of the Sarsfield and Hogan clans worldwide to visit the city, with which their names are so famously associated. It is hoped to make Sarsfield's Day an annual event which will attract visitors from far and wide, to join in and celebrate the glorious history of this ancient city.
