Knocknagoshel Halloween Festival

27 October 2013

Knocknagoshel Halloween Group is a community-based non-profit group based in Knocknagoshel, County Kerry. It has been organizing a yearly ghost trail in Knocknagoshel village since 1994 with the proceeds being divided between local community groups and nominated charities. Its mission is to raise funding for local community groups and nominated charities and also to promote and raise the profile of Knocknagoshel parish. From humble beginnings in 1994 with approximately 50 local children attending, its popularity gradually grew with children from the surrounding parishes attending in the following years. By 2000, the attendance has increased from hundreds to thousands with people attending from all corners of Ireland and beyond. In 2003, a coach of passing French tourists were diverted through the village and stopped off to see the ghost trail. They were so impressed that they brought a coach full of French tourist over for the following five years. The group's work was presented to and acknowledged by President Mary McAleese in 2010 as part of the Kerry Community Awards. It also featured in an RTE Nationwide Halloween programme in 2011. Since 1994, over €500,000 has been raised for charity. The ghost trail always takes place on the Sunday of the October Bank Holiday weekend.
