The East Kerry Roots Festival will be held during National Heritage Week, with an aim of becoming an annual event in East Kerry. It will be a celebration of the unique culture and heritage in the greater Sliabh Luachra area. People from around the world, who have an ancestral link to East Kerry, are encouraged to come back home for the Week of Welcomes, and enjoy the activities and events that will be organised, during the festival, in Castleisland and the surrounding parishes. The visitors and locals will be able to enjoy some of the following activities: • Visiting the parish of their ancestors • Spending time in the graveyard where their ancestors were buried • Doing a genealogy workshop to help them find out more about their ancestors • Meeting some long lost cousins • Attending sessions of Sliabh Luachra music • Spending a “Day in the Bog”! • Dancing a “set” at the cross-roads • Taking part in workshops on local history, playing the bodhrán or sean-nós dancing • Listening to songs and story-telling in a Rambling House • Attending a 1950s style Wedding • Following a Heritage Trail through the area • Supporting a local parish in a match with a rival neighbouring parish • Attending a special “Welcome Home Concert” to celebrate common threads and bonds in music, song, dance, story-telling and poetry • Taking part in a Memorial Mass with Traditional Music to celebrate the memory of all our ancestors Buses will be available during the week to transport visitors to and from activities. Payment will be by event attended.
