A Taste of West Cork Food Festival
10 September 2012 - 16 September 2012
World renowned food, combined with the most idyllic part of Ireland, makes A Taste of West Cork the perfect festival for all the family and provides an opportunity to hundreds of local producers and chefs to showcase their wares to people passionate about food. This year’s festival is set to be bigger and better with a harvest change to the traditional open air food and craft market, food demonstrations and tastings, themed nights in restaurants in Skibbereen and beyond, the very popular Celtic Cook Off, blogging workshops, cookery competitions, traditional music nights, walks and talks with a special performance from one of Ireland’s best singer/ songwriters, Declan O’Rourke. There will be a real focus on our food heritage with special homage being paid to the humble spud with Ireland’s favourite root taking centre stage with a variety of events looking at the importance of the potato in Ireland including a special workshop by Eanna Ni Lamhna from RTE’s Mooney Show. The potato will also be the focus of photographic exhibitions, talks and demonstrations celebrating the great Irish potato not to mention potato shooting, blindfold Mr Potato head making on Sunday for the kids. And of course special potato dishes will be served in every restaurant in town! There will also be an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of Records for the most varieties of potatoes baked and tasted in one place. There will be a call on national radio to have as many varieties as possible…. so keep your ears peeled. Monday features a ‘drawing room discussion’ with food experts, a tasting of potatoes dishes through the ages and a little bit of drama….’Echoes of Ireland’ consists of 4 monologues beginning with a famine survivor and ending with one of his descendants, a New York on 9/11. There is a lot more too including an Orchard Picnic and Music and a Foraging and Finding Your Dinner event in the 200-year-old Lissard Estate.
