Each September, Galway City, on the west coast of Ireland, comes alive with seafood and oysters as it celebrates the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, the most internationally recognised food festival in Ireland and the world's longest running oyster festival. Throughout the festival, there will be a host of tantalising events to whet your appetite - join the seafood trail of Galway’s finest restaurants, visit the Taste of the Sea with Bollinger showcasing Galway’s Seafood heroes then cheer on the brave contestants in the Bollinger National Oyster Opening Competition! Or why not take a tour to the world famous Galway oyster beds and heritage workshops? There's so much to see at the food village at the festival marquee, live bands all weekend from 80’s music to traditional Irish, tours to the world famous Galway oyster beds, heritage workshops, wine masterclass, the Guinness World Oyster Opening Championship, a Mardi Gras gala event through the streets of Galway and the Ballygowan Family Fun Day with giant games, kids fancy dress, cooking demonstrations, 'Hot Oyster Awards' cooking challenge, Irish Coffee making and jive and jazz. There will be a range of engaging food heritage events marking Galway’s rich food history, with a strong emphasis on the sea, its’ produce and the fishing communities that have relied on it over the centuries. Listen to Seanachai regale you with the story of the Galway oyster. Indulge in ‘Tales by the Sea’, a range of talks on the history and traditions around oysters, seafood and maritime heritage. Claddagh school children and their families will also put on a very special traditional evening of song, story and sea, focused on the centuries of local fishing tradition.
