Tramore Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival

Tramore

15 September 2012 - 23 September 2012

Join us in Tramore for this great Surf and Sea Festival. The first week begins with the launch on Friday 14th at Oceanics Surf School with a Surf Art exhibition and the unveiling of Molly, our seaweed doll who will be displayed at Oceanics for the week. The Ladies Surf Weekend will also take place on the first weekend. The second weekend will be all about family fun with entertainment and stalls, including Skate Jam, the Market on Sunday and, of course, the Michaelmas Parade. Tramore Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival showcases a coastal community's celebration of its relationship with the sea through the revival of an old tradition unique to Tramore. Circa 1920s, the women of the town who worked the bathing boxes on the beach made and carried seaweed dolls around the town where they would receive a token of appreciation from the town for their hard work over the summer months. They would then parade the seaweed dolls and finally cast hem into the sea. The 2012 festival draws on the community relationship with the sea and hosts many family friendly events such as surfing, eco walks, seaweed & coastal talks, skating, dog shows, food trails, markets, evening entertainment, art, history & photographic exhibitions etc. The festival concludes on the family fun Sunday with the dressing of the seaweed doll which is then paraded and cast out to sea by the people of the town.
