Tullynally has been the home of the Pakenham family, later Earls of Longford, for 350 years. The great hall of the castle has magnificent acoustics and the Derravargh Music Association, run by volunteers, has been bringing superb music here for over 25 years. This summer's concert celebrates the music of Turlough O' Carolan, the famous 18th Century blind harpist, who played for all the nobility of Ireland. It is hoped to gather the descendants of many of his original Irish patrons for this unique event. Harpist Dearbhail Finnegan was brought up in the village of Nobber, Co. Meath, the birthplace of O' Carolan and so has a special connection with his music. Since 1996 she has combined a busy solo performance career as well as being director of the Meath Harp Academy, a centre for learning Irish harp. Dearbhail's husband Robin Slater will accompany her on the flute, playing some South American as well as traditional music. Between them they have played for royalty, presidents and many dignitaries around the globe and have made numerous recordings. The audience will be welcome to bring picnics and enjoy Tullynally's beautiful and extensive gardens before the concert. Alternatively guests can book delicious home cooked suppers in the castle tearoom.
