Saint Patrick's Well, Magherakeel

Add to My Ireland Castlederg Tyrone - Northern Ireland

Situated in the Derg Valley along the ancient pilgrimage trail to Lough Derg, one of Ireland’s most important ecclesiastical centres, lies a holy well known locally, as Tober Patrick.

It is said St. Patrick stopped here to quench his thirst on his return from a period of Lenten sacrifice on the nearby island of Lough Derg. Close to the well is ‘The Plain of the Church’ or Magherakeel Monastic Site, dating from early Christian times (6th century). A small section of the wall remains of what was St. Caireall’s Church which was named after the founder or local patron saint.
