Galty Mountains

Rising high above the plains, the Galty Mountains form an impressive backdrop to the verdant Glen of Aherlow and Ballyhoura Country. Galtymore is flanked by a variety of summits; some are rounded others flat, some are stony and others boggy. Keen mountain walkers can traverse the whole range from end to end in one long, tough trek. Down in the gentle Glen of Aherlow and Ballyhoura Country, a range of short and easy way marked walks have been established. These climb onto the lower slopes of the Galty Mountains, or onto the forested Slievenamuck ridge on the northern side of the glen. Others are routed through lower valleys or beside rivers. The aim is to allow visiting walkers to sample a wide variety of scenes and include several points of interest along the way. Long distance walkers could sample a stretch of the Ballyhoura Way, which runs through the Glen of Aherlow over the Slievenamuck ridge and across the plains to Tipperary Town and Limerick Junction. It just goes to show that it’s not really such a long way to Tipperary after all! The Ballyhoura International Walking Festival is held every May, introducing hundreds of walkers to a wide variety of the routes on the Galty Mountains and in the Glen of Aherlow. Experienced local guides lead a variety of walks during the festival and offer plenty of background information about the area.
