Inishcaltra is an island found in Lough Derg, about 2km from Mountshanon, County Clare. It is the location of a 7th-century monastery established by St Caimin and burnt by the Vikings in 836 and 922. Chieftain Brian Boru is said to have built one of the churches on the island, while his brother was the abbot. From the 17th century to the mid-19th century, the 50-acre island was a place of pilgrimage. Today, visitors can explore the remains of at least five churches, early monastic cells, a cemetery and round tower.
