The race that brings out the betting man in the least likely of us, the Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National, truly is an event that captures the hearts and imaginations of the nation. Held on Easter Monday, it is the high point of a three day long celebration and a major day on the racing calendar. With a prize fund of €250,000, it is the most valuable handicap jump race run in Ireland, a race of three miles five furlongs and twenty four fences, it will have you on the edge of your seat. The atmosphere and build - up to this race have to be seen to be believed. A crowd of thirty thousand and more, getting swept away by the anticipation of the big one, the celebrated horses and riders being greeted by tumultuous applause, a buzz in the air that you will carry with you for many years to come. You would be forgiven for thinking that Fairyhouse is all about the Grand National, but with twenty two meetings a year, it is the venue for many of the biggest meetings in the horse racing calendar and you will always find something to enjoy all year round.
