Before you go
Once you know where you’re going, what route you plan to follow and what locations you want to visit, planning a walking holiday in Ireland is a cinch. First off, it’s essential to do your research. Find out more about potential routes to see what attractions each one offers. Many walks require a map . The Ordnance Survey 1:50 000 series covers the whole island and are the standard walker’s reference. Accommodation
Not only does Ireland boast a wide variety of wonderful walking ways, but many of the country’s top routes are close to plentiful accommodation! And if you’ve just completed a challenging 10-day trek, then the warmth, hospitality and comfortable surroundings of Ireland’s top quality B&Bs and guesthouses will be just the ticket. For the walker embarking on a route that takes several days, B&Bs and guesthouses are a real saviour, although it’s always best to book ahead whenever you can, and many now offer evening meals and packed lunches as part of the service! Self-catering in Ireland is a real joy, too, with properties ranging from traditional Irish thatched cottages and fabulous castles to chic modern apartments. Accommodation is usually available on a weekly or weekend basis, providing facilities for you to cater for yourself. It also gives you a good base and a home from home to return to after a great day’s walking. Find out more about accommodation in ireland

Use a walking operator
There are lots of other advantages involved in using a local operator to organise your trip and transfer your luggage. Firstly, the itinerary will be expertly arranged based on the extensive experience of the guide. And you’ll be given the best possible accommodation choices, as well as being directed to the best evening venues for traditional music, song and dance and other entertainment. You’ll also receive personal insights into the local region, its history, culture, flora and fauna. Plus, going on a guided walking holiday can be a huge amount of fun, with great company provided along the way. And it’s always good to know that a fully qualified group leader is never far away.
For walkers who like a more independent approach, there are still lots of benefits to be gained from letting a professional take the strain of holiday logistics. Many local operators will also support self-guided trips and will pre-book accommodation and provide daily route maps. All you have to do is put on your boots, take to the great outdoors and enjoy the scenery. Find out more about Ireland tour operators
