Glenarm Castle, one of Northern Ireland’s oldest estates is home to the McDonnell family, Earls of Antrim, since the early 17th century. Today the castle is home to Randal, Viscount Dunluce (son of the present Earl) and his family.
The Walled Garden is open for events throughout the year. In July they welcome visitors to their annual Highland Games, a wonderful day out for the whole family featuring world class Highland Games.
The Walled Garden was originally created to supply the Castle with its fruit and vegetables and now filled with exciting flowers and specimen plants to interest the keenest horticulturalist. Beautiful in all seasons, the garden is open from May, when you can see the fabulous display of bulbs and apple and pear blossom, until the end of September when the garden is still in full bloom with rich displays of herbaceous plants.
The Barbican Gate was built by Anne Catherine, Countess of Antrim (in her own right) in 1825, having been designed by the Morrison brothers as part of her romantic redesign of the Castle and surrounding buildings.
The Tea Room which is situated in the old Mushroom House is open daily to garden visitors and the general public. Here you can come and relax and enjoy a delicious homemade cream tea or a light lunch overlooking the kitchen garden. The gift shop, located in the Tea Room, sells quality Glenarm Castle merchandise and gifts for the gardener.
2012: Walled Garden and revamped Tea Room open from Good Friday to end of September.
