Leap Castle near Birr, County Offaly is reputed to be one of the most haunted castles in Europe. In 1532, a priest was murdered here by his brother while he was saying mass. The castle’s turbulent history also involves a ghoulish dungeon filled with spikes into which prisoners were thrown. The castle’s victims either died of starvation or died on the spike, and layers of human skeletons were discovered here in the 1900s. People now testify to numerous ghostly sightings, as well as a general feeling of unease about the castle.
