Description

Castletownshend Cork - Ireland South

Castle Townshend has been the seat of the Townshend family in Ireland for many generations. The centre part was built around 1650. The original Castles were destroyed in the 17/18th centuries. The two towers were then added to the present Castle, using the stone from the ruined Castle. It stands in spacious grounds facing southeast, overlooking the peaceful waterfront of Castletownshend Harbour. The Castle has access to stoney beach and woodland. Most of the seven bedrooms, dining room and sitting room have a sea view. There is also a large terrace beside and overlooking the harbour of Castlehaven. Free WiFi available in the Castle. The Castle also has several kayaks, Oppis and a small punt available for guests to rent. Lifejackets are provided. The Castle can also take guests out on small open fishing boat. For those wishing to rent larger craft, Orkneys are available to hire by arrangement. There are two whale watching trips that leave from Castletownshend. The village of Castletownshend is centred around the steep main road that leads down to the Castle, the quayside and the harbour. There are a number of pubs in the village, including the Egon Ronay listed pub and restaurant Mary Anne's. There is also a post office and a shop. Golf courses at West Carberry and Bantry are within 40 minutes drive and horse-riding in Ballydehob is only 13 miles away.
