Ballyneety —County Limerick
Historic 'flash point' of the daring raid on the siege train reinforcements heading for Limerick city in 1691 which ranks as one of the greatest feats in world military history. Led by the aristocratic Patrick Sarsfield (Lord Lucan) hero of the 2-year siege, and guided by the outlaw 'Galloping Hogan', 600 men or horseback made a roundabout sweep of 60 miles (96km) through the night-time mountains of Clare and Tipperary to surprise and destroy the cannon guns and supplies 4 miles from the besieged city.
The 'Sarsfield's Ride' route is marked out by road signs, and Sarsfield's Rock behind Templebredon Church south of Pallasgreen is a monument to Sarsfield overlooking the site where the siege train made camp.
