Belturbet Station, Belturbet, County Cavan

This 1885 cut-stone railway station is now home to a visitor centre. The centre houses a fascinating archive of memorabilia including original tickets, timetables and special railway artifacts, and is an ideal spot for railway enthusiasts and children.

Dun na Rí Forest Park

This picturesque park features a dramatic gorge and the Romantic Glen of the Cabra River – an area that will thrill anyone with even a passing interest in Irish legends.

Killykeen Forest Park, County Cavan

Around five kilometres from Cavan town, Killykeen Forest Park is a delightful 600-acre haven for birds and wildlife. It also contains historical sites including an Iron Age ring fort, and is an ideal spot for outdoor activities such as sailing, canoeing and orienteering.

Lakeview Gardens, Mullagh

With beautiful local surroundings filled with drumlins and lakes, these newly restored gardens offer a peaceful diversion and an excellent variety of plants.

St Killian’s Heritage Centre, County Cavan

Born in 640 AD in Mullagh, County Cavan, Saint Killian became a missionary to Wurzburg in Germany and was later martyred there in 689AD. This exhibition details his life and times, as well as the work of Irish missionaries in Germany in the sixth and seventh centuries. 

The Killycluggin Stone, County Cavan Museum

One of the most important exhibits on show at the Cavan County Museum, the Killycluggin Stone is believed to have religious significance associated with fertility. Discovered on a farm in 1921, it’s thought to be Bronze Age in origin.

Cavan enjoys a number of golf clubs including the Park Hotel and Golf Club with a nine-hole course, the 18-hole County Cavan Golf Club, the nine-hole Black Lion Golf Club, the nine-hole Cabra Castle Golf Course, and the 18-hole Slieve Russell Hotel Golf and Country Club.

Walking

Get active with a walking tour of Cavan town and the surrounding area. There are three different routes to explore from short strolls to longer rambles. You can also walk the Cavan Way with a 25km route that passes prehistoric monuments and beautiful scenery.

Culture & Festivals

Cavan kicks off with fabulous festivals, and is famed for its world class crystal

Belturbet Festival of the Erne, Belturbet

Running from the 28 July to the 7th August 2006, this lively family festival includes the international angling calendar, outdoor music, waterbased events, a personality pageant called “The Lady of the Erne”, lively bands, talent shows, fireworks displays and a parade.

Cavan Crystal Craft and Design Centre, County Cavan

Have a look at some splendid crystal from Cavan Crystal, or if that doesn’t take your fancy you can choose from other crafts including tableware, furniture, textiles, pottery and ceramics, jewellery, wood, linen, ironcraft and sculpture.

Maudabawn Cultural Centre, County Cavan

This delightful stone walled thatched building set in East Cavan is a charming location for a cultural tourism centre. One of the earliest court tombs in Ireland lies close by at Cohaw.
