The name Nire Valley comes from the Gaelic words Gleann na hUidhre, which means glen or valley of the yellow/brown stone. The source of this moniker is evident along the river banks as it meanders down towards the River Suir near Newcastle. This area is filled with Irish culture, with the Irish language spoken here as the primary tongue. And to this day many of the old Gaelic phrases and customs have survived modern times, which makes this festival a voyage of discovery as well as a feast for the senses.
