Foynes —County Limerick
Home of the ?Irish Coffee? brew which warmed flying boat passengers when the Shannon estuary port of Foynes became the stepping stone between Europe and North America in the pioneering days of transatlantic aviation from the 1930s.
The old terminal building now houses the Flying Boat Museum and the Irish Coffee connection is marked with an August festival in the yachting and watersports centre. Ruins of a medieval church look out from the hill of Knockpatrick, south of Foynes, and 5 miles to the southeast is the 13th century Old Abbey convent of the Augustinian Canonesses.
