Piccola e bellissima, estremo lembo orientale del Nord-Ovest d’Irlanda, la contea di Monaghan è poco conosciuta, quasi "segreta". Il suo è un paesaggio tranquillo di colline ondulate, laghi lucenti e cittadine vivaci.
Quasi nascosto nell’estremo entroterra settentrionale della Repubblica e a un soffio dall’Irlanda del Nord, il Monaghan è un nido accogliente e avvolgente dove indugiare e saziarsi di pace e silenzio. Un paradiso dove dimenticare la folla e la fretta e concedersi il lusso di "tirar sera" passeggiando, pedalando, pescando o giocando a golf…
Terra fertilissima anche dal punto di vista culturale, il Monaghan è tra l’altro la culla di uno dei più grandi poeti irlandesi: Patrick Kavanagh. L’intera contea trasuda letteratura e storia. Lo testimoniano anche i siti megalitici dell’età del Bronzo e i numerosi reperti preistorici di cui la contea va giustamente fiera.
E la gente qui va fiera anche del proprio estro creativo. Non perderti una visita alla Carrickmacross Lace Gallery, monumento all’antica arte del merletto praticata qui con maestria fin dall’Ottocento.
