La più piccola contea d’Irlanda, microscopica ma luminosissima gemma preziosa nella collana della Costa Orientale, è un bellissimo regno lillipuziano letteralmente stipato di meraviglie da scoprire, dai paesaggi indomiti attorno al Carlingford Lough fino al museo sotto il cielo della Boyne Valley.
Da brava piccoletta, la contea ha saputo sempre farsi largo nella storia d’Irlanda e di quel passato glorioso porta ancora evidenti le tracce. Quanto agli scenari naturali non si è fatta mancare proprio nulla. La sua bella costa raggiunge l’apoteosi nell’incantevole quanto selvaggia penisola di Cooley, culla di miti, leggende e racconti popolari.
La città di Carlingford, con il suo patrimonio storico, se ne sta pacifica ai piedi delle verdi pendici della Slieve Foy Mountain, sul limitare del Carlingford Lough, romantico specchio d’acqua che ingentilisce il profilo dell’antico centro medievale. A Dundalk, invece, si respira un vento nuovo e frizzante, con bei musei e una schiera di negozi eleganti, bar accoglienti e ristorantini invitanti.
