Terza città della Repubblica, Limerick domina bellissima le sponde di uno dei fiumi più pittoreschi dell’isola, lo Shannon. Conquistata dai Vichinghi nel nono secolo, la città –oggi pervasa da un fremito di modernità- sfoggia ancora un impianto urbano e importanti edifici di epoca medievale.
Come per esempio l’antica cinta muraria con il celebre King John’s Castle, vecchio di 800 anni. La storia antica della città è testimoniata anche dai reperti conservati nell’Hunt Museum. Quest’ultimo, però, è oggi celebre soprattutto per la sua straordinaria collezione d’arte, con capolavori firmati Picasso, da Vinci e Renoir. Una destinazione unica insomma, antica e moderna al tempo stesso. E alla moda anche, con negozi griffati, ristoranti eccellenti e alberghi lussuosi. Ci sono comunque sistemazioni per tutte le tasche in questa città, punto di partenza perfetto per escursioni nei dintorni.
