Follow the Atlantic Film Trail to find the locations of your favourite films while taking in the spectacular scenery of our stunning Atlantic coastline. The West coast has provided the locations - and often the inspiration - for some great films. You can follow in the footsteps of cinematic greats such as Meryl Streep, Fred Astaire, Richard Harris, Gabriel Byrne and John Wayne. See the spots where The Quiet Man fell in love with the fiery Mary-Kate. See where Ken Loach directed Cillian Murphy in the Palme d'Or winning The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Or where Bull McCabe struggled on the scenic, but harsh Connemara coast. Download the Atlantic Film Brochure here.

The Big Screen
Names like Mel Gibson, Colin Farrell and Tom Hanks roll off the tongue when thinking of ‘The Big Screen’ and all of them have an affinity to Irish films down through the years. From Tom Hanks action packed shots on the beach in Co.Wexford during Saving Private Ryan to Mel Gibson’s battle scenes in Braveheart at Trim Castle, Co.Meath. Ireland has long been recognised by the worlds leading filming producers as a natural stage, even stepping up to the mark whenever fantasy is required with the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare providing the backdrop to the box office hit Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The Small Screen
Ireland has long been a firm favourite in Britain for small screen productions, one such TV show being the much acclaimed Father Ted, which was filmed on the picturesque Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. It’s now recognised as a cult classic by many, with the Aran Islands hosting a Tedfest in honour of the humorous series each summer. Other TV programmes of note filmed in Ireland were Ballykissangel, which was filmed in the glorious garden of Ireland Co.Wicklow as well as the hugely popular television comedy drama The Irish R.M. which was shot in the West of Ireland.
