DruidMurphy is the story of Irish emigration, both of those who went and those who stayed behind, told through the plays of Tom Murphy, one of Ireland's most respected living dramatists. Crossing oceans and spanning decades, DruidMurphy covers the period from The Great Hunger of the 19th Century, to the 'new' Ireland of the 70s, exploring what we mean when we call a place home. The cycle will consist of two plays, Conversations on a Homecoming and A Whistle in the Dark. 'Conversations on a Homecoming' is the story of Michael, an emigrant returning to a humble small town pub in Galway after a 10 year absence. Meeting up with old friends in The White House, a theatre of dreams for their younger selves, they have to face up to the changes that time has wrought and begin a process of self discovery. 'A Whistle in the Dark' is set in 1960's Coventry, where Michael Carney is an Irish emigrant living with his wife, Betty, whom he has recently married. At Michael's request, they have been playing host for some time to his brothers, Harry, Iggy and Hugo. However, while Michael can lay fair claim to having integrated well into English society, the same can't be said of his brothers. Now the imminent arrival from Ireland of his father and younger brother causes tensions to boil over. After a highly successful tour in 2012, these plays are a highly anticipated theatrical event and early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. Druid presents DruidMurphy in a co-production with Quinnipiac University, N.U.I Galway, Lincoln Centre Festival and Galway Arts Festival.
