An Tóstal Salthhill

Galway City

05 May 2013

The An Tóstal festival, for the third year running, will again showcase the very best of Irish coastal traditions and customs through All-Ireland Currach Racing along the promenade of Salthill. Ladies Beach in Salthill is the hub of all the activity on the day and also serves as the best viewing point for the days racing on the water. Also taking place on Ladies Beach in Salthill is the Tug' O War competition, weights throwing competition and of course the children's sand-castle competition. Live bi-lingual commentary of the races will keep all spectators up-to-date with all the races and results while also keeping people entertained with traditional Irish music. Many different dialects of the Irish language can be heard as teams from all along the west coast of Ireland will gather to celebrate their shared customs and traditions as they compete in the first round of the All-Ireland Currach Racing League. This year is historic as we join in the celebrations of The Gathering and bring people from all over Ireland to Salthill to celebrate in what is the 60th anniversary of the original An Tóstal festival in Galway which took place in 1953 as part of the national An Tóstal festival. A truly unique event.
