Mute Meadow

Add to My Ireland Derry City Londonderry - Northern Ireland

Mute Meadow is the largest public art project on the island of Ireland. It is located on the banks of the River Foyle along the south side of the Parade Ground at Ebrington, the former military base in Derry~Londonderry, extending down to the bank of the River Foyle. The work was created by two internationally recognised artists, Vong Phaophanit, a former Turner Prize nominee (1993) and Claire Oboussier.

The artwork is made up of 40 pairs of columns that will reflect and refract natural light and create a play of shadows during the day and transform into a gently animated field of light at night. The meadow also acts as a sundial during the day throwing light and shadow across the river, and as a light sculpture at night.

The animated light patterns from the sculpture will be generated from sounds collected from the city of Derry~Londonderry, made up of a collection of recordings including conversations, traffic, noise, poetry and music, captured by the city’s residents through a community engagement program developed by the Verbal Arts Centre.
