Irish Champion Stakes Day at Leopardstown is always one of the most exciting afternoons of the entire flat racing season with top quality racing attracting a large attendence each September. The big race itself is invariably a thriller and some of the great champions of the turf have battled it out for the major honours over the years. Built in 1888 and modelled on Sandown Racecourse in England, Leopardstown racecourse is situated in the suburban belt, six miles south of the city centre. Set in beautiful surroundings at the foothills of the Dublin mountains, it is a pleasure to visit and is recognised as one of Europe's premier racecourses. On race days, thousands of turf-lovers flock to the course to enjoy one of the nation's favourite pastimes.
