Cruinniu na mBad FestivalKinvara Galway - Ireland West
Cruinniu na mBad, Kinvara is a unique event celebrating our maritime history, where nothing can surpass the vision of the 'Brown Boats stealing through the misty haze' as they sail into Kinvara Quay. Galway Hookers, mostly from Connemara, will congregate in Kinvara Bay for a weekend of racing. There are 4 classes of Hookers - the smallest Pucan (up to 18ft), the Gleoteoig (up to 28ft), the Leath Bhad and the largest: the Hookers. On Saturday 4 Hookers will sail into Kinvara Quay laden with Turf as they have for generations and for this race the will use their old Calico sails. These boats are 150 yrs old and have been in the same families for generations. They will be joined by all the other Hookers for the big race on Sunday afternoon. There will be a Climin (seaweed raft) race on Saturday and Sunday. Gaelic is the language of the crews and the weekend will be a showcase of the best of Sean nos (old style) singing and dancing. On Saturday at 8pm any aspiring singers can compete in a traditional singing event An tAmhran Beo and there will be music all around the village over the weekend.
