CLOSED FOR WINTER - REOPENING MARCH 2012. Collanmore Island, one of the 365 fabled isles* of Clew Bay, County Mayo is a place apart. There are no roads, no cars, even the postman arrives by boat to this beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful island which enjoys magnificent views of the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick and the bay. Historically Clew Bay was the focus of the O'Malley family possessions in the Middle Ages, and is associated especially with Grace O'Malley, also known as Gráinne Mhaoil or the Pirate Queen. The Island is home to Les Glenans purpose-built sailing centre teaching dinghy and catamaran courses. We can accommodate up to 50 people in comfortable clean hostel-style accommodation with a unique atmosphere. Sailing courses at all levels, from beginner to advanced, from dinghies to catamarans, are on offer and the sheltered waters around Collanmore provide a safe and fun environment for learning to sail. Dinghies and cats sail close to the island in two beautiful enclosed bays, and more advanced courses set off to explore Clew Bay and its many islands. After dinner, on adult courses the fun continues with sing-songs and tall tales in the Club's bar, where even the Guinness has travelled well by boat. Instruction is bilingual with instructors from Les Glenans' French centres encouraged to take up positions in Collanmore. Check the website for full information on the various courses, events, etc. at Les Glenans Sailing Centre.
