Ireland West
Beautifully constructed, old stone walls contain the Vandeleur Walled Gardens, once the garden of the Vandeleur landlords’ home, Kilrush House. The gardens are set among 170 hectares of native woodland in County Clare. Once forgotten, the garden underwent restoration work in 1997. It now contains many unusual and tender plants that thrive in the area's uniquely western latitude micro-climate. Other features of this horticultural gem include unusual water features, a tree collection, horizontal maze, summer house, butterfly trail, agricultural machinery display and the Vandeleur Glasshouse. The quiet courtyard setting of the Vandeleur Centre includes a coffee and gift shop, conference suite and plant sales area. The 'Kilrush in Landlord Times' display provides an insight into the site's former guise while various events take place during the year such as art and craft exhibitions, historical lectures and family fun days. Free entry is being offered throughout 2012.
