St Brigid’s Cathedral & Round Tower

Add to My Ireland Kildare Town Kildare - Ireland East

St Brigid’s Cathedral in Kildare Town dates back to 1223. It is found on a site with great religious history, as it’s believed to be the place where St Brigid founded a nunnery in the 5th century. The present cathedral, which was restored in the 19th century, contains many links to the past, including a 16th century vault, early Christian and Norman carvings and the High Cross. The Gothic-style architecture reflects the structure’s dual purpose as a place of defence and worship. Also on the grounds, the 12th-century round tower extends 33m toward the sky, making it the second highest in Ireland. The impressive tower was constructed from Wicklow granite and local limestone. During the summer months, visitors are invited to climb to the roof, where they can take in stunning views of the surrounding area.
