What’s on in the equestrian world?
From the pomp and ceremony of dressage to the pride of the ponies at local fairs, grab a ring-side seat and enjoy the show
Fairs
For pure, unadulterated entertainment and lashings of authentic Irish tradition, head to a horse fair like Oul' Lammas Fair in County Antrim, and the Connemara Pony Show in County Galway. It’s not just the horses that draw the crowds – music, storytelling and dancing go on late into the night.
Shows
Summer agricultural shows are a great way to experience Irish country life, such as the Belfast Balmoral Show in May, and offer excellent entertainment for all the family.
If you prefer your events on a grander scale, then the Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show, 8 - 12 August at the Royal Dublin Society's grounds is the place to go, with some of the most accomplished show jumping in the world. For more information click here telephone +353 1 240 7213
Horse Sales
You might not have room in your suitcase for a thoroughbred, but even if you’re not buying, a trip to an Irish horse sale is an experience in itself.
Don't miss...
- Goffs in Kill, County Kildare and Tattersalls in County Meath both of which specialise in the sale of thoroughbreds.
- Goresbridge Sales in Kilkenny and Cavan Equestrian Centre in Cavan Town also cater for the sport-horse market.
