Custom House Studios & Gallery

Custom House Studios & Gallery are located overlooking the harbour at the Quay in Westport, County Mayo. The studios originated in the 1980's among locally based artists who recognised the need for a base or centre of the arts for studio space and an exhibition space. Mayo County Council and Westport Town Council became involved by making available the old custom house at the Quay as a site for the project. This building has been carefully restored, conserving its historical architectural features. It now has seven studios, a printmaking workshop and a gallery space. There is a continuing programme accommodating international visiting artists who are encouraged to spend time working in Westport at Custom House Studios. This is a most interesting aspect of the programme as it allows an opportunity for artists to develop works based on their experiences in Westport and its surrounds. Under this initiative, artists have visited from many countries, including Japan, USA, Canada, England, Holland, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, as well as other parts of Ireland.
