Towns of North Tipperary
Terryglass —County North Tipperary
For over two decades now, this village has maintained an award winning position in the National Tidy Towns Competition. In 1983 it received its highest accolade when it was voted Ireland?s Tidiest village, and repeated this achievement in 1997. Indeed it has all the ingredients of excellence featuring a church, school, two restaurants, a community hall, craft shop and accommodation. A ten minute walk takes you to the Quay where a major marina has been developed in recent years to cater for the cruiser craft on the river Shannon. This is an area of special beauty and looks across the lake at Portumna.
From the quay you will see the unfurnished Norman Castle, Old Court. It has four towers attached to a rectangular centre. It is on private property and not accessible from the quay. Note appropriate piece of sculpture in the village centre featuring a heron on granite stone in recognition of Terryglass winning the Tidy Towns Awards.
