Shrule —County Mayo
Shrule (Sruthair) is a quaint village on the N84 just beside the County Galway border. A fine 13th century Norman castle dominates the village, and there are several other archaeological monuments in the surrounding area. The Black river, which marks the Galway-Mayo border, flows one side of the village and is reputed to provide great fish to those who can catch them. The village green, beside the castle, is an idealk picnic spot (weather permitting!), and a great place to begin a tour of the local historic sites.
