Towns of North Tipperary
Puckane —County North Tipperary
A little inland from Lough Derg is Puckane (Pucán), an attractive and busy village that merits a visit. It?s plethora of traditional style cottages are interesting and attractive. The village was the first to be chosen in North Tipperary for the development of twelve Rent an Irish Cottage units in the early 1970s. This development led to a Craft Shop at Teach and Gheata being developed a little north of the village, which is still vibrant.
The stone entrance here is a reminder of the big house era, and served as the main entrance to the former Johnstown House, built in 1770s and long demolished. Kennedy is a prominent and well acclaimed name here, not least of all for the skill of hurling and high achievements of fashion. The church was built in 1859 and has a Harry Clarke studio stained glass window of interest. Commercial interests are strong in this area and the village is now one of a few with its own thriving garage.
