Newport —County Mayo

Newport (Baile Ui Fhiachain) is a small picturesque town at the northeast corner of Clew Bay. The town is now a popular angling and tourist centre.
The jewel of Newport is St Patrick's Catholic Church (1914) in the Irish Romanesque style by Rudolph M Butler. Its beautiful stained glass east window (Last Judgment) is the last one completed by Harry Clarke (1930). The fine doorway at the entrance is modelled on the one in Clonfert, Co Galway. Major refurbishment works have been carried out on the viaduct in Newport and it looks particularly well floodlit at night.
The grandfather of the late Philadelphia-born film star, Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco, came from the townland of Drumilra, a short detour off the R311 about 3km from Newport. She visited the area on a number of occasions.
