The Parish of Kilmichael which is divided between the baronies of West Muskerry and East Carbery, was originally called Uibh Flann Luadh or Iffanloe.
On the road from Macroom to Dunmanway is a monument to an engagement in the War of Independence, 1920. The engagement was subsequently remembered in the song The Boys of Kilmichael.
