Clonfert —County Galway

Clonfert is half way between Ballinasloe and Portumna and was once a city celebrated for its schools and learning when up to 3,000 students came to study here in the 16th century. History permeates Clonfert still, and one can feel it in the old cathedral, in the nearby Bishop's Palace (now a sad ruin), and in the wonderful 14th century wooden statue of Our Lady of Clonfert in the nearby Catholic church.
