When you’re in Downpatrick, County Down (A20) a visit to Down Cathedral is a must. Closely associated with St Patrick, a stone in the grounds marks the spot where St Patrick is thought to be buried. The St Patrick’s Centre, also off The Mall in Downpatrick, is a fascinating interpretive exhibition that tells the story of Ireland’s Patron Saint and is well worth a visit.

Leaving Downpatrick, make your way on to the small but very important city of Armagh – the ancient ecclesiastical centre of Ireland. There are two cathedrals in Armagh – one Roman Catholic and one Church of Ireland – both are dedicated to Ireland’s Patron Saint and both of them are definitely worth a visit, as is St Patrick’s Trian Visitor Complex.
