Derry-Londonderry City
Appointed as the UK’s City of Culture 2013, Derry/Londonderry is one of the finest examples of an old walled city in Europe, and a walking tour around these ancient fortifications is a definite must on any itinerary. Derry/Londonderry has a relatively young population, and as such there are plenty of lively pubs, clubs and nightspots, world-class restaurants and an impressive music scene to discover.
Galway City
Tiny but mighty, Galway is a multicultural hub with an intoxicating energy and a fun-loving ambiance. Winding pedestrian streets lead to quirky boutiques and unique craft shops, while the plethora of bustling cafés, cosy pubs and intimate restaurants will keep you well fed and watered during your stay. Take a coastal stroll to the seaside suburb of Salthill, visit the bustling Galway Market or catch a lively gig in Róisín Dubhs.
Cork City
Cork hit the headlines this year as The Queen visited the famed English Market, but this southern city has long been attracting visitors drawn to its eclectic arts scene, great shopping, vibrant city centre and reputation as a culinary hotspot. Hugging the banks of the Lee, Cork is a lovely place to wander around, and if you fancy exploring the nearby coastal towns and villages there are plenty of transport options for a great day trip.
Waterford City
Despite it being one of Ireland’s oldest, Waterford City is a fabulous blend of ultra-modern shopping centres, pedestrianised walkways, lively traditional pubs and highly acclaimed gourmet restaurants. And the city promises to delight and impress the senses without relinquishing its unique local spirit.
Limerick City
A bustling, vibrant and exciting destination, Limerick is packed with excellent shops, wonderful restaurants and some enjoyably indulgent accommodation and makes a great base for exploring the excellent surrounding sights. Limerick City has a beautiful location on one of Ireland’s most picturesque rivers, the Shannon.
Ireland’s cities are easily accessible no matter which one you choose – most have their own airport (Belfast even has two!), and Galway lies just an hour from Shannon Airport, with plenty of regular coach transport as well as car hire options. Dublin, Belfast, Shannon, Cork and City of Derry Airports each offer several routes to and from the UK, so no matter where you’re based, you’ve got no excuse not to visit!
