- Address Currane, Achill Island, Co Mayo
Description
Achill Island Mayo - Ireland WestCurrane is situated 10 kilometres from Achill Sound and 10 kilometres from Mulranny. The name Currane is derived from an Irish word meaning reaping hook or sickle, due to the unique shape of the Currane Peninsula. Steeped in tradition, Currane is well off the regular tourist trail and as such gives you an insight into the real Ireland. That being said, there is a lot to do locally and both young and old will find it an experience they won't forget. Currane is the peninsula on the way to Achill. It comprises the villages of Tornragee, Polranny Belfarsad, Currane and Dogh Beg. The Currane Peninsula is the home of the world famous Compass Bar public house. Currane is also the home of Fr Griffin Park which is the local community sports field overlooking views of Croagh Patrick, Achill Beg Island and Clare Island. It hosts rugby, Gaelic football, soccer matches and has even hosted a game of cricket. Achill Island is connected to the peninsula via a bridge. It's a place of extreme beauty dominated by 2 mountains, one is Currane Hill where you will find spectacular views of Clew Bay.
