Description
Callan Kilkenny - Ireland SouthCatherine and Mickey Gabbett, your hosts at Ballaghtobin, are renowned for entertaining friends, colleagues and guests. For almost 350 years the Gabbett family and their ancestors have lived at the working farm and home of Ballaghtobin. As Catherine and Mickey’s son William explained at only age seven ‘The Gabbetts have lived at Ballaghtobin for a very long time. There is a Barrack Room which was used for drunkards who drank too much at parties and could not ride home. Mummy says nothing has changed.’ At Ballaghtobin you are guaranteed a warm and entertaining welcome. This impressive Georgian house is set on 450 acres of cereals, blackcurrants, Christmas trees and woodland. All the bedrooms have been refurbished and although the furniture is antique, the beds are new. There are televisions, tea and coffee making facilities, ensuite bathrooms and showers with oodles of hot water and hot towel rails in every room. WiFi access is available. Each of the rooms have their own unique character: the Spare Room features a Georgian fireplace and enjoys views of Slieve na Mon and the Kilmaganny Hills; The Nursery Room is set in the oldest part of the house with old family portraits and a King sized double bed; The Barrack Room is where drunken visitors were sent to sleep! Ballaghtobin is a peaceful place, ideal for those wishing to spend some time far from the madding crowd. Situated on an historical site, there is a ruined Norman Church opposite the front door and some of the older buildings including the dovecote and the kennels for the Irish wolfhounds date back to the 17th century. Mature trees dominate the views around the estate and there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen. There is a hard tennis court, a testing croquet lawn and clock golf for the less energetic. There are numerous places of interest to explore within a half hour drive of Ballaghtobin including the medieval city of Kilkenny, Kells Priory, Jerpoint Abbey, Dunmore Caves and the historic town of Carrick-on-Suir. For golfers there are a number of championship golf courses nearby one notable choice being the famous Mount Juliet.
