Set in the shadow of Slievemore Mountain, Keel Holiday Cottages offer a collection of holiday cottages on Achill Island, Co Mayo. Eight of the self-catering cottages are graded three-star and the rest are of a four-star standard. Situated within easy walking distance of the fabulous blue flag beach at Keel, all of the cottages have Gold Shield electric central heating, colour television and modern kitchens fitted with electric ovens/hobs, microwave, grill and fridge. Cooking utensils, tableware, duvets and bed linen are all provided. Cots and baby-chairs are available on request. There is a reception and laundry on site, and ample car parking space in the grounds. These holiday cottages are available all year round. The three-star cottages accommodate five people and have two bedrooms – one double bedroom and one single bedroom. There is an additional drop-down double bed in the living area and an extra visitor bed in the single room. Two of the three-star cottages have open fires, and one is designed to suit a disabled guest. Each four-star holiday cottage accommodates six people and has three bedrooms (one double bedroom en-suite downstairs and two twin bedrooms upstairs. There is a bathroom with bath/shower on the ground floor and another toilet upstairs. Achill is Ireland's largest island and visitors here will be able to enjoy activities like hill walking on the wild mountains, surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing and kayaking on the various beaches and lakes, horse riding on the beaches and quiet country roads or playing golf, sea angling or just exploring at leisure. Bicycles are also available for hire. History buffs might enjoy visiting various sites like the Deserted Village situated on the slopes of Slievemore Mountain, Grainne Uaile's 15th-century castle at Kildownet or the 'Achill Mission' at Dugort which dates to the 1830s. Achill is also a painter’s paradise. The island has always been a favourite retreat of artists and photographers. Its old-world character has attracted many famous writers down the years including the German Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll.
