Rock of Cashel

The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most spectacular archaeological sites – a collection of medieval church buildings and fortresses set on top of a limestone outcrop rising out of County Tipperary’s Golden Vale. It is a significant historical site and for 600 years was the power-base of the kings of Munster. Many of the old church buildings still survive and a gentle trek to the top of the Rock offers wonderful views around the 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, 13th century Gothic cathedral, 15th century Castle and the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral.

A welcome for visitors

To say the Rock is steeped in history is an understatement, and it’s easy to immerse yourself in what these structures and remains meant to Ireland in years gone by. Guided tours, audiovisual presentations, shows and exhibitions are all available, but you need to contact the site in advance to arrange a time. Alternatively, you can download an information leaflet from the Heritage Ireland site to follow the centuries long history of this magnificent place. The site is open all-year round, but opening hours vary depending on the time of year. Closed 24th, 25th and 26th December.

In the area

Once you’ve explored the Rock, you can turn your attention to the more contemporary offerings around the pretty town of Cashel, just 500m down the road! Cashel is an excellent base to tour around South Tipperary, and taking in the breathtaking views of the lush Glen of Aherlow is definitely a must. But before you head off on the road, food lovers must check out the local produce, in particular Cashel Blue Cheese. Nearby Cashel Heritage Centre is also a big draw and presents the entire background to one of Ireland’s most significant ecclesiastical Centres – dating back far beyond the arrival of St Patrick!

The Details

Tickets for entry to the Rock itself can be purchased at the entrance gate; arrangements can be made for visitors with disabilities if you email in advance (rockofcashel@opw.ie); similarly groups must be booked in advance.
